The Innovation Bootcamp is meant to introduce participants to the field of medical innovation in a more informal setting. Here, the participants will have the chance to learn from our trainers various strategies and tools which they may apply when creating their own plans when it comes to both scientific research and business planning. This 3 day event includes, research design, grant writing and pitching workshops, as well as networking events for to get to know one another and share ideas.
Meet our trainers.
Radu Pirlog, MD is currently pursuing his residency in Pathology at the Cluj Napoca Emergency County Hospital and is a PhD Student at the Center for Functional Genomics, Biomedicine and Translational Sciences, from the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy. His research focuses on understading the role of the tumor microenvironment in the pathogenesis of various cancers.
As a student, he was active in student organisations both at local, national and international level. He was the representative of UMF Cluj-Napoca students in University Council of Administration, University Senate, and Faculty of Medicine Council from 2015 to 2017. In 2017 he was one one of the promoters and founders of the ASAIH - Student's Entrepreneurship Association Iuliu Hatieganu.
In the last three years, he was involved in two international Joint Actions funded by the European Union as the representative of Romania and he was a team member in 5 national and international research projects.
Radu has a wide experience in Grant Writing and Project management accumulated during the last years, he submitted more than 20 grant proposals to local, national and international calls. Also, from 2017 to 2019 he was the president of the Action for Health Association and organized soft-skills trainings for medical students and professionals on grant writing, scientific writing, scientific presentation, and statistics.
Radu Pirlog, MD
Diana Gulei, PhD works as a researcher in Research Center for Advanced Medicine – Medfuture from Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, RO. Her main area of expertise consists in targeted therapeutics in cancer, especially for late stages malignancies with the purpose of limiting the metastatic process.
She started to publish in July 2017 and currently has over 30 scientific articles in the oncology area that comprise more than 150 impact factor points; 2 international book chapters and 1 national book. In approximately two years of publishing, Diana has a Hirsch index of 8 and a total of over 200 citations. She finished her PhD in medicine in less than three years and ended her thesis with over 80 impact factor points (articles as first and co-author).
During the PhD program, between October 2017 and March 2018 she went for training in Experimental Therapeutics, MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas, Houston, TX, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. George Calin, the author of the first publication with microRNAs deregulation in cancer. During the six months training she focused on non-coding experimental therapeutics in cancer, specifically microRNAs, long-non coding RNAs, ultraconserved regions and pyknons.
She recently received the “Rada Mihalcea for Young Researchers in Science and Engineering”– 5th edition (2019) National Award for her activity in research. She also won the first prize in "IDEAS of Inventions" competition 2018, Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy and ASAIH, project that was further selected by World Bank in the Research Valorization Program - Foundational Training, between July and December 2019. She is team member in over 10 national and international research projects and project director in two of them.
Zaki Milhem, MD
Zaki Milhem, MD is a resident in Psychiatry and a PhD Student at the Center for Functional Genomics, Biomedicine and Translational Sciences, from the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy. His research is focused on developing a cheap and accurate point of care test that differentiates bacterial from viral infections in the primary care setting.
Zaki's main areas of interest are digital health innovation, corporate health innovation, translational research and business bridging & opportunities. As a student, he founded and is currently CEO of WakeZ, a disruptive digital solution for better sleep. With WakeZ, Zaki is leading Romania's first digital interventional clinical trial, while also leading a cross-disciplinary team made out of doctors, psychologists, business analysts, marketing specialists and engineers. WakeZ won ALL innovation & start-up competitions it entered. Also, he wrote, won & implemented a public funded project, having started a Psychiatry clinic equipped with a state-of-the art device called TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulator).
During the past year, Zaki was speaker and/or trainer at over a dozen prestigious events, such as Stanford Medicine X, Techfest, Mindchain, I4T and others, promoting digital innovation in healthcare and medical student entrepreneurship. His biggest challenge to date, one he hopes to accomplish in 2020, is to be accepted as a speaker at UMF Cluj's local students' conference, Medicalis. He can offer know-how and advice in monetisation of research projects, pitching and presentations, study protocols and research project management.
